Wahiba Sands - “Another weekend trip”

Main track on the Wahiba
Just before last weekend i was sitting in the office and watching the Google Earth.  i wanted to go somewhere but not to far from muscat and just for one night camp. Wahiba sands appeared  as a natural destination for just one night desert trip. I am not a big fan of Wahiba Sands. This location is very popular and every weekend massive number of “explorers” going there just to get some fun in fancy prepared Jeeps or spend nice time in the one of the tourist camp located between the sand dunes.

I called to my friends and did not need to much time to convinced them to go. We set off in the morning in two land cruisers FZJ100 and equipped just for a basic camping stuff. Afternoon after short break in the local restaurant in Bidiyah we moved into the desert. Our destination point was 60 km far from the edge of the Wahiba sands. First several kilometers we passed many of cars with local beduin in the old Nissans Patrol or Land Cruisers 79 pick up. There was a few groups of local Omani guys in the Jeeps trying to reach very steep sand dunes. After 30 km we were on the more quiet part of Wahiba sands. No more cars and people. We were alone!
Sunset and the place where we spend the night

The weather was perfect.  26C‘, small wind and the sun but did not operate to strong that day. In evening just a few minutes before  the sunset we found good positions for night camping and pulled over our cars between two small sand dunes. My dog Trop was very happy and immediately moved between the sand heaps and small desert plants. was very quite. Just wind made some noise nothing more. I took my camera and went on the short walk.
Dunes on the Wahiba

Overview on the Wahiba
The dunes during the sunset made very vivid and photogenic forms. Light and shadows created abstractive forms on the desert surface. Dachshund Trop was in “heaven” and constantly chasing small animals living on the desert. Mouses, lizards etc.

We set the camping between cars and prepared some simple food on the fire. We went to sleep earlier.

It was great day.  No internet, wifi, phone calls and other aspects of the modern life.

I wish everybody same experience.

It was my 227 trip in to Omani interior since autumn 2007.
